Singer Shakira was presented with a United Nations medal last week for her humanitarian efforts towards helping impoverished children. At the ceremony, held in Geneva as part of the U.N. World Day of Social Justice celebrations, U.N. labor chief Juan Somavia said Shakira was a "true ambassador for children and young people, for quality education and social justice."
Upon receiving the award, the Grammy-winning artist said, "It's not too late to keep our promise to our children, but we must act now. Together, we can make education and decent work for all a reality."
The Colombian singer, 33, has worked as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is a member of the ALAS foundation, which seeks to provide education and healthcare to poor children throughout Latin America. Shakira also founded the Barefoot Foundation, whose work centers on bringing education to more than 6,000 underprivileged children in her native Colombia.
